News: News about Legal Education
New EWLA Working Group!
It will look at questions like these:
How are lawyers trained in the different EU countries? (For example, do all lawyers in your country need a Master’s degree. How long does it take to qualify?)
What impact will the Bologna process, working towards more harmony across EU Higher Education, have on training in your country and across the EU?
There are arrangements for your qualified lawyers to practice elsewhere in the EU – do they work?
How does this idea of transfer apply to training, in the light of the Morganbesser case?
Those of us training lawyers or working as legal academics may have considered these questions already – this working group provides the opportunity to look also at other questions such as:-
What is the proportion of women to men lawyers across the EU and country-by-country?
How is this affected by the method of training?
Are the education systems for lawyers in your or other EU countries making it easier or more difficult for women to qualify? (For example, would more flexibility in training, enabling students to combine it with family or work commitments, help here?)
Are the methods for transferring to practice in another country flexible enough for women with work/family responsibilities to take advantage of them?
Higher Education in Europe is facing a time of change, and this will affect how lawyers are trained too – this is our chance to work together to create an overview of legal education (to see what we have) and then to make recommendations that can be considered seriously when changes are made (to recommend how thing might be better).
All lawyers need training, this is an opportunity to shape that training and help mould the profession of the future!
Please start by posting a brief statement about lawyers train in your country, together with any other comments, on our bulletin board ("Legal Education").
