Presentation skills

Monday, November 28, 2011
Judith Willis (past General Secretary of EWLA) ran a session at the Berlin Congress on Presentation Skills. This skill, increasingly required in the modern legal and business world, can be overlooked in the training of lawyers, where the emphasis is often on court appearances. It was a humorous and good-tempered session, which lived up to the practical ambitions of the Congress.

Judith, an independent consultant specialising in legal education, used her more than 20 years’ experience to give a dynamic presentation in which she outlined the basic requirements for a good presentation, with or without visual aids such as PowerPoint. Choosing their own topics, members then consolidated their learning by giving short presentations of their own, demonstrating considerable skill and support for their colleagues. We heard about things that mattered to members and were reminded again of the diversity, humanity and thoughtfulness of our fellow women lawyers.

In the time available, only the basics were covered, though Judith alluded to the possibility of learning more sophisticated presenting skills once the basics are mastered. To gain a flavour of the session, the slides Judith used are
